Cinematic Documentary “Seeluft statt Lockdown”
In spring 2021, the coronavirus pandemic forces politicians to take numerous measures that severely restrict public life. Universities of applied sciences and universities have been hit particularly hard: Not only is learning being shifted to remote locations, but financing studies is also becoming a major challenge for many due to the loss of part-time jobs. Marine research in particular is suffering from the cancellation of expeditions. Research vessels are even to be put on hold until the pandemic situation improves. Under many protective measures, four scientists and 14 students from various marine disciplines set off for Eastern Canada on the research vessel Maria S. Merian in June 2021. The aim is to investigate the variability of the Gulf Stream and Labrador Current over the last 10,000 years. In the documentary “Seeluft satt Lockdown”, Kiel marine geophysicist Dr Felix Gross provides an insight into marine research and the students’ commitment on the high seas.
The documentary screened first during the CINEMARE International Film Festival 2024. Further screenings will be announced via the Center for Ocean and Society and Kiel Marine Science.
